People’s reactions to the same face differ depending on the makeup. Cosmetic applications really can change the way people see you!
A study by Procter & Gamble , Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston University and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute had participants rate how they felt about the same faces without makeup, natural makeup and glamorous makeup. They found that the difference does impact how you are perceived as participants felt the people were more competent, likeable, attractive and trustworthy with makeup than without.
Can and does makeup affect your career?
Interestingly, in 2009 The Times reported that "64 per cent of directors said that women who wore make-up look more professional”. The same report quoted 18 per cent of directors as saying that women who do not wear make-up “look like they can’t be bothered to make an effort”. And an article from Glass Hammer in 2010 said: "There is strong statistical evidence to show that women who wear make-up in business get better jobs and are promoted more quickly.”
It’s probably quite obvious that a dramatic gothic style makeup with pale skin and lots of dark or black eye shadow along with black or purple lips and nails could be seen as quite scary. Halloween makeup for example will probably provoke a very different reaction to the same face having a natural or nude makeup style. Gothic or dramatic makeup can look great at the right moment but in the office or everyday life it can give the impression that you have the wrong attitude. Halloween makeup is an extreme example but it shows how what you wear on your face makes a difference to how you’re perceived. Wearing makeup is no different to most things in life, where moderation is the key.
Want to get ahead in any situation…from social scenarios,
to love or even in your career?
The secret to getting the right makeup balance lies in the
triangular area from the eyes down to the lips - the so-called ‘social
triangle’.
Create a flawless
base
Using the right foundation is always very important, find one that’s right for your skin type and with the right undertone and coverage you require. The aim is to even out your complexion and hide any spots or blemishes with a colour that blends to your neck, without visible ‘tide lines’ along your jaw. First impressions count so you want even texture and a natural radiant glow.
If you don’t wear foundation or aren’t used to applying it
regularly then try a mineral powder foundation for easy application that feels
light and breathable whilst also reducing shine.
Dark eye circles can make you look tired and older; you want
to draw attention away from them to focus on other features. But be careful not
to use too heavy a concealer as the skin round the eye is more delicate than
the rest of your face and you do not want to emphasise this area. Take care when using a facial highlighting
pen to apply precisely where required; over extend past the dark circle area
and you will be back to where you started, with two uneven shades.
It’s important to get the eyes right…
Too much or overly-dramatic eye colour can be off putting, but equally none at all can be aging.
Use an eye shadow close to your natural skin tone all over your eyelid for daytime to brighten the area while maintaining a natural look. Eyeliner is designed to make your eyelashes look fuller so frame your eyes by lining close to the eyelash roots.
Then apply mascara from root to tip of your top lashes to open up your eyes. Take care with mascara on lower lashes, as we get older it can draw attention to crow’s feet and dark circles.Want to be seen as a fun person?
Cheek colour should create a healthy flush and enhance your flawless complexions. When you laugh your cheeks colour, so opt for a shade that is natural on you and two shades deeper than your skin tone, brush from the apple of your cheeks back towards your ear. So be a fun person and fake the natural flush.
Perfect your smile
It is natural that during conversation people are drawn to your lips. Youthful lips are full and plump so define your lip shape with a nude lip liner a shade lighter than your natural lip colour. A warm and genuine smile will complete a great first impression.
DID YOU KNOW? - In 2007, researchers from Kanebo Cosmetics evaluated the impressions of subjects when looking at their own faces wearing makeup. The findings suggest a woman’s makeup can confer a friendly, easy-to-talk-to mood, it will tend to make her more receptive to communication and to open up more opportunities for making friends. The act of applying makeup enriches a woman from within and plays an extremely important role in facilitating social communication.
